ZAIDEE’S RAINBOW FOUDATION LAUNCHES SOCKTOBER

On Monday 1st October 2018, Zaidee’s Rainbow Foundation will be launching Socktober; an initiative created by CEO Allan Turner to increase organ and tissue awareness in Australia and how awaiting a transplant can be an uncomfortable process.

Socktober will be running from Monday, October 1, until Wednesday October 31, and is encouraging everyone to wear just one sock any day of the week to work, school, gym or just around the home.

CEO, Allan Turner says “We can take for granted the simple things in life and how they can make something more comfortable on a daily basis, this also applies to our tissues and organs, we always think about our main organs such as the brain, heart and lungs but it is not just these organs that makes us live, move and function everyday. When you are awaiting a transplant for something such as a kidney it can be a long, uncomfortable and distressing period.”

It is anticipated that by wearing one sock will provide continued support for organ and tissue donation and could lead to increased donations in Australia, and can help save lives. Everyone has socks and by wearing one, taking a picture and putting on your social media page during October can ‘Inspire Discussion’.

ABOUT ZAIDEE’S RAINBOW FOUNDATION
Kim and Allan Turner created Zaidee’s Rainbow Foundation in memory of their
daughter, Zaidee Turner. Zaidee tragically and suddenly died in 2004 at the age of
seven after suffering a burst blood vessel in her brain. Of the 103 children under the
age of 16 who died at the Royal Children’s Hospital in 2004, Zaidee was the only
Victorian child to donate her organs and tissues that year.
Zaidee was also one of only six children to donate nationally and one of the
youngest Australian donors on record in 2004. The donation of Zaidee’s organs and
tissues resulted in the lives of up to seven others being enhanced or saved.
In 2017, Australians had the highest donation rate in the past 46 years of transplant
on record of 510 solid organ donors, giving 1672 transplant to those that now have a
second chance in life or a great improvement to their life, but we still need more
people to keep donating at the end of life to keep this result high.
“We also hope that families who are faced with the same situation of losing a loved
one can feel gratified to know that from their loss they are able to help others,” said
Kim Turner, Zaidee’s Mum.

Zaidee gave the greatest gift of all after she died her organ and tissue so others
could live a better life and in most case just to live.
